Code Orange and Code Red Procedures

Below are some safety procedures I've worked out in case of a thunderstorm or "squall". These were worked out from an experience I had in 2003. Code Orange is preparatory whereas Code Red is a reaction to something bad happening like unstoppable fire, missing crew, medical emergency, etc.

I'll have these on a card so we all remember them on the Segel.

_________________________

Code Orange

  • Only Skipper declares code Orange

  • Only Skipper issues orders during Orange.

  • Never abandon ship unless ship abandons you.

  • Procedures

  • 1. Life jackets put on immediately, Jason checks all vests.

  • 2. Crew get in cabin, check radar, and yar the cabin.

  • 3. Start diesel, take down sails, secure lines.

  • 4. Hold fast but NOT THE MAST.

  • Note: Casualties stem from those who panic, from boatmen who lose their heads when the going gets rough.

    Code Red
    1. Only Captain declares Code Red, if not able, First Mate, Colin, declares.
    2. Obey commands without hesitation, "Never abandon ship unless ship abandons you."
